The Poisonous Origins: St. Anthony's Fire
For centuries, a horn-shaped fungus known as Claviceps purpurea, or simply "ergot," plagued the rye fields of Europe. When cold, wet winters yielded to damp springs, the ergot fungus thrived. Unknowing peasants would harvest the blighted grain, mill it into flour, and bake it into their daily bread.
The consequences were catastrophic. Entire villages would succumb to a terrifying, mass affliction known in the Middle Ages as "St. Anthony's Fire." The symptoms were dual-natured and equally horrific. Some victims suffered from gangrenous ergotism; the alkaloids in the fungus severely constricted their blood vessels, causing fingers, toes, and limbs to blacken, wither, and eventually separate from the body. Working methodically, he synthesized various derivatives of lysergic acid, the core chemical compound found in ergot. His intention was never to create a mind-altering substance; rather, he was attempting to formulate an analeptic—a circulatory and respiratory stimulant to aid failing patients.
1938: The 25th Derivative
In 1938, Hofmann synthesized the twenty-fifth derivative in his sequence: Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, abbreviated in German as LSD-25.
He proudly handed his new creation over to the Sandoz pharmacological department for animal testing. Yet, in the spring of 1943, Hofmann was struck by what he later described as a "peculiar presentiment." He simply could not banish the 25th derivative from his mind. Driven by this inexplicable urge, Hofmann decided to do the unthinkable: he was going to re-synthesize a discarded chemical.
April 16, 1943: The Impossible Absorption
On a Friday afternoon, April 16, 1943, Hofmann began the tedious process of re-synthesizing a few centigrams of LSD-25.
Suddenly, mid-synthesis, he was overcome by a strange, creeping sensation. He felt dizzy, unusually restless, and slightly intoxicated. The feeling grew so intense that he was forced to abandon his work, leaving the laboratory early to head home and lie down.
In his official report, he described sinking into an "extremely stimulated imagination." With his eyes closed, he perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes, and intense, kaleidoscopic plays of color. After about two hours, the vivid phantasmagoria faded away.
Hofmann was utterly baffled. He deduced that he must have accidentally absorbed a microscopic trace of the LSD-25 solution through his skin. To this day, the exact mechanism of his accidental absorption remains a historical mystery, as LSD is notoriously difficult to absorb transdermally. When Hofmann finally arrived home, the experience spiraled into a terrifying psychological ordeal. He asked his assistant to fetch his neighbor, a Mrs. R., to bring him milk, desperately believing it might act as a neutralizing antidote to the poison in his veins.
When Mrs. R. arrived, Hofmann did not see a helpful neighbor. He saw a malevolent, insidious witch wearing a brightly colored mask. His familiar living room transformed into a nightmare landscape. The furniture spun in continuous circles, taking on grotesque, threatening, animated forms.

The Scientific Shockwave: From Magic to Molecules
The discovery of LSD sent a tidal shockwave through the global psychiatric community. Before 1943, psychiatry was largely dominated by Freudian psychoanalysis.
